Every year, the major IT industry leaders typically have a conference where they announce new products, features, or programs. Over a two- to three-day period, people network, receive awards or recognition, and participate in numerous meetings and training sessions to brush up on their knowledge and skills. You typically leave with a renewed sense of enthusiasm about the company and its offerings, and a mental commitment to put the information to use in future consultations and client conversations.

Last month, at the HPE Discover Annual Convention, the lid was blown off with an announcement that will no doubt be a game changer for many organizations. Not only did HPE further expand the application of its highly successful GreenLake offering, “…it brought a supercomputer to the party,” to quote Forbes writer Steve McDowell in his June 28 article. It’s a breakthrough offering and one that only HPE would be able to roll out, given their dominance in the world of supercomputing.

AI-as-a-Service or Supercomputing-as-a-Service? Or Both?

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT require massive supercomputing ability, which most organizations can’t support with their existing infrastructure. The ability to use the GreenLake Pay-as-You-Go consumption model (PAYGO) to access hundreds or even thousands of CPUs or GPUs for a specific period of time (i.e., two months) in essence “democratizes” this breakthrough technology trend for companies of all sizes. The cost saving is significant – 50% to 100% over the public cloud – and the time to value is significantly reduced as a result.

Plus, HPE’s recent partnership with AI-start-up Aleph Alpha offers a pre-trained LLM that enables customers to leverage their own proprietary domain-specific or business-specific data to train and fine-tune a customized model. This significantly shrinks another common obstacle to market entry and gives companies a huge head-start on the road to positive ROI.

And finally, in keeping with the collective commitment from the AI market leaders to improve energy efficiency and rely more heavily on renewable energy sources, HPE GreenLake for LLMs will run on supercomputers initially hosted in QScale’s Quebec colocation facility that provides power from 99.5% renewable sources.

Get There Faster, More Efficiently and One Step Ahead of Your Competitors

What can this new technology do for your organization? The positive business outcomes are almost too numerous to list, but here are the major ones worth noting:

  • Improved Decision-Making: By leveraging large language models, organizations can analyze and extract valuable insights from unstructured data sources such as documents, social media feeds, customer reviews, and more. This enables better decision-making by uncovering patterns, trends, and sentiment within the data that may have previously been overlooked.
  • Increased Efficiency and Productivity: Supercomputing capabilities offered by HPE enable organizations to process large-scale datasets and complex computations at unprecedented speeds. This leads to improved efficiency, faster time-to-insights, and increased productivity in tasks that require massive computational power, such as scientific simulations, data analysis, and deep learning training.
  • Competitive Advantage: By leveraging HPE’s large language models and supercomputing solutions, organizations can gain a competitive edge by harnessing the power of AI and advanced computing. This enables them to deliver innovative products and services, optimize business processes, and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
